We had a great time learning the latest techniqes in electromagnetic field ablation for the treatment of liver cancer. Working with porcine, we learned about DC (3000 volts), RF, and microwave ablation guided by the latest ultrasound imaging systems. Our members were given a private demo of a portable, rugged ultrasound machine — the same model used by medics with the Navy Seals. Also we were given our own teaching session on ablation were we inserted probes into the liver of a pig under anesthesia. It required a steady hand with the approach guided by ultrasound imaging. One hand was used to insert the probe, while the other holding the ultrasound imaging sensor. Once inside the tumor, it was time to fry bacon at 3000 volts.

We had an action-packed workshop in orthopedics that included total knee replacement, total hip, and rotator cuff arthroscopy. About 80 surgeons participated in the international workshop where we all learned about the latest techniques and tools, including a new impact drill that sounded (and felt) like a jack hammer with a foot-long bit for reaming the femur for a hip prosthetic. We had plenty of opportunity to practice suturing on fresh cadavers as we closed 4 hips and knees. We were taught a few suturing tricks from Methodist surgeons like one-handed suturing. Cool day at the office.
